Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

I just finished Nevernight by Jay Kristoff and I am not going to lie I am still struggling with how to rate this book. It started off pretty slow for my taste and I was a bit distracted with all the flashbacks in Book 1…that is until I got sucked into Mia’s history more than her present. It did pick up pace in Book 2 though so I only suffered for a few chapters.

Mia Corvere also referred to as Crow, Kingmaker and Pale Daughter is nothing short of a kick-ass heroine, something I really appreciate in my high fantasy novels. The whole plot revolves around her wanting revenge for the death of her family and trying to become an assassin’s apprentice to achieve that. Overall I liked Mia. She was badass, snarky, with just a hint of spitefulness in her. She was also capable of compassion which made her such an interesting character.

What this novel really grabbed me with is the world-building. It’s executed perfectly, guys. I am dying to find out more about the Republic and the Red Church. I need to know more about Mia’s powers. Also if the sequel can somehow bring some more Bastard page time, I’d be a happy camper. I did end up giving it 4/5 stars on Goodreads because  there’s twist there that really took me by surprise.

Pre-orders are running at the moment so get your red sprayed edged copy at Goldsboro’s Books or a black edged from Waterstones.
